Do you want to watch a film that will make you want to kill yourself by the end of it? Well, you’ve come to the right place! This existentialist tragedy follows the life of theater director Caden Cotard and his Sisyphean attempt to write a play that ends up encompassing the lives of every citizen in New York. This coincides with his increasing detachment from his own family, which begins to bleed into the play. In the process, the dividing line between theater and reality becomes increasingly blurred. Synecdoche, New York is Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut, and is his first project where he is allowed full creative control. The end result is either a deep exploration of creative ambitions and the interpersonal costs that are associated with it, or just pretentious meta bullshit, depending on one’s point of view. Come to Cinema Neuf to find out where you stand! Charlie Kaufman USA 2008 124 min 35mm English Dialogue, Norwegian subtitles Skrevet av Aslak Leo Jåsund
