1. Pay the semester fee and register with SiO
The first and most important thing to do as a student at any institution is to pay your semester fee. This must be done every semester by the deadline. We also recommend registering with SiO so you don’t miss out on all the great student benefits!
2. Sign up for courses and exams
Next, check if you need to register for classes and exams. This is done on Studentweb or whichever system your institution uses.Deadline: September 15
3. Apply for exam accommodations if needed
If you have any health issues that require accommodations, get them sorted as soon as possible. Your GP or a SiO counselor can help.
4. Join a gym

5. Get your student card
Once you’ve registered for the semester, remember to get your student ID. It’s often your key to reading rooms, discounts, special rooms, library cards, and printers.
6. Buy your textbooks
Check Facebook groups or Finn.no for second-hand textbooks. You can also buy them at Akademika, where you’ll find help and advice too.
7. Get to know your campus library
Campus libraries can be overwhelming, so many schools offer courses on academic writing, book searches, and using library systems. You’ll be glad you took the time to learn it all.

9. Join a study group
You'll be going through a lot of material each semester, so it’s great to team up with others. Talk to someone you like from class and agree on regular study meetups.

10. Make a study plan for the semester
The reading list can seem like a lot, but a study plan makes it manageable. Once you get an overview, it won’t feel so overwhelming.
11. Get contents insurance
If you live away from your parents and are over 20, their insurance won’t cover your stuff. It’s important to have your own home contents insurance.Read more about what insurance you need as a student.
12. Know your monthly expenses
Track your spending! Set up a budget that includes things like:
- Rent
- Electricity and internet
- Spotify and Netflix
- Food and household items
- Public transport
- Gym
- Clothes and shoes
- Insurance

13. Change your GP

14. Join a student association
