Bike = freedom

Only 13% of students use a bike to get around. That’s a trend we hope you’ll help us change.

When you're packing for your big move to the city, bringing a bike might not be your top priority. It’s bulky and takes up space. But once you arrive, we can almost promise that seeing Oslo by bike is something completely different. It’s faster than public transport, and in the summer it honestly feels like you’re in a movie – cruising through Norway’s student capital. When the tram is late, the bus is delayed, and the late-summer air is heavy, biking gives you a sense of freedom. Plus, it’s good for both you and the environment.

How to get a bike in Oslo

Already in Oslo and want to buy your own bike? Check out finn.no or Tise. If the bike is a bit worn out, give it a little personal touch – and maybe treat yourself to a matching helmet. If it needs air or a tune-up, Oslo municipality has great resources with info about bike lanes, parking spots, air pumps and service stations. Some SiO student housing also has their own bike rooms where you can do basic repairs yourself.

If you’d rather not own a bike, go for a subscription with Oslo Bysykkel. It gives you the freedom to grab a bike at one station and drop it off somewhere else when you’re done. You can choose between day passes, monthly or seasonal subscriptions – and it’s all super easy through their app.

Where should I ride?

Once you’ve got your bike, take a few trips just to get familiar with Oslo. Pick a day when the weather’s nice and you’ve got time. It’s not the best idea to try out your first ride when you’re late for class or it’s pouring rain.

Explore the city. Find the fastest route from your home to campus, your favourite hangout spot, a friend’s place – or the best park in town. You can use Oslo Municipality’s cycling map made especially for students. Just get out there and enjoy life on two wheels.

The wind in your hair (under your helmet – yes, you should definitely wear one), and off you go – fast and on time – to your lectures and meetings. We hope you give biking a try and make the city your own. Ride safe and have fun!
