Applied for student housing? Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions

Our waiting lists are dynamic and continuously changing. As a result, it is unfortunately difficult to predict when you will receive a response regarding your application.

Waiting times are affected by many factors, including when you apply during the year and whether applicants with priority status are in the queue at the same time as you.They are also affected by how many residents terminate their contracts, how many applicants submit or change applications, how many accept or decline housing offers, and which housing units are involved.This means there is no numbered queue position that you can track. Unfortunately, even if you contact us, we cannot tell you where you are in the “queue.”

Unfortunately, it is impossible to say. It depends on factors such as your priority status, which housing options you have applied for, and when you submitted your application.

First-semester students are prioritized by age, with the youngest applicants receiving the highest priority. (Read more about this in SiO housing's Allocation Regulations. )Please note! This priority only applies for contracts starting August 1. After that date, first-year students no longer receive special priority.

Yes, you can. We recommend updating your existing application rather than submitting a new one.

• It may be beneficial to apply for housing in larger student villages such as Sogn, Kringsjå, and Bjølsen.
• (Several new units at Nordberg Student Village will be available from September 2026. At present, there are available one-room apartments. Apply and set your preferred contract start date to September 23.)
• There are often more available single rooms in shared housing than studio flat (private kitchen/bathroom).
• It may also be helpful to apply for unfurnished units.
• Add up to six different housing options to your application.
• Make sure to select the “similar housing” option in your application.

If you need housing, SiO generally recommends accepting the offer. If you are staying for longer than one semester, you can apply to change housing later. 

If you decline the offer, you must submit a new application and will be placed at the bottom of the waiting list. 

Yes. If you do not receive admission, you may terminate your contract by July 31.

If you are not admitted, please send us documentation confirming this by July 31 and terminate your housing contract. For more information, see our Student housing FAQ.

Yes. Housing offers are not sent out on specific dates but are allocated continuously throughout the summer.

You will receive your housing offer by email, so make sure to monitor your inbox throughout the summer.

Based on previous years, more student housing becomes available in December and January, making it much easier to secure housing at that time.If you have the option of living at home or staying elsewhere until then, your chances of obtaining student housing are good.You may also want to review the information about Nordberg Student Village in question 6.

Yes. SiO offers temporary accommodation at “The Yellow House” (Det gule huset) at Sogn Student Village.Information about this service will be published on sio.no.

Historically, it is easier to obtain student housing in December and January.

If possible, keep your application active if you can live at home or elsewhere until then.
