Mari Langmyr, a student advisor at SiO Health, has some helpful advice on how to jump-start your studies and get the most out of the start of the semester.
Get an overview
As a new student, it’s totally normal to feel overwhelmed by everything coming your way. There are stacks of books to read, papers to write, and a calendar full of deadlines. According to Mari, it’s often the feeling of not being in control that causes stress. That’s why getting a clear overview early in the semester can make a big difference.

Reset your sleep schedule
Many students lose their sleep rhythm over the summer—sleeping in until 11 becomes the norm. Mari suggests a fun way to reset your routine:
“Make a deal with a study buddy to meet for morning coffee every day for a week! Make it fun—see who looks the most tired!”
Get more out of your lectures
A big chunk of student life happens in the classroom, so it’s worth making the most of it. Try these tricks:
Read the syllabus before class.
If you’re short on time, skim the headings to get the gist of the topic.
Ask yourself: if you were giving this lecture, what would you highlight?
On your way to class, brainstorm what the topic might be about.
You probably know more than you think! Activating your prior knowledge helps you connect and remember new material more easily.
Let go of worry
As a new student, you might feel out of your depth—and it’s easy to focus on worst-case scenarios. But instead of worrying about the exam result months away, try to focus on what you can do today.
“You can’t control your exam scores right now, so focus on the tasks in front of you,” says Mari.
Start planning for exams now
Yes, exams are a long way off—but preparing early is key. Here are Mari’s five tips for making the most of your semester:
Focus on small, doable tasks today—not the final result.
Be active in lectures—ask questions to stay engaged.
Write everything down in a calendar.
Figure out when during the day you concentrate best—and build your routine around that.
Make sure you have time every day for guilt-free breaks and fun.
