Join a student association
There are hundreds of student associations in Oslo! Joining one is a great way to make your study years more social, fun, and memorable. Want to game, watch movies, dance, brew beer — or try something totally new?
There’s a group for almost every interest, and it’s a great way to make friends who share your hobbies and passions.

Get your textbooks early
Textbooks sell out fast and the best secondhand deals go quickly. Check out Finn.no or Facebook groups related to your study program to find affordable used books.
Also: get a library card at your university. Many course books are available there and at Deichman, the public library in Oslo. A card also gives you access to reading rooms — some open until 11 p.m. Deichman Bjørvika is one of Oslo’s most beautiful buildings — totally worth a visit!
Get to know your campus
Find out where your lectures are and the closest public transport stops. Explore your campus and nearby hangouts. Discover where to eat lunch, who serves the best coffee, and where to read, write, meet your group, catch some sun — or even date someone new.
Explore student discounts
Once you’ve paid the semester fee, you get great prices on healthcare, gym membership, food and drink, plus access to courses, events, and student associations through SiO.
Many museums, cultural events, shops, and restaurants in Oslo also offer student discounts — just ask! Always carry your student ID so you’re ready.
Get used to student budgeting
A few hacks for surviving just before the student loan arrives: stock up on essentials while you still have money. Oats, pasta, veggies — anything you can turn into a simple meal later.
At the start of the semester, divide your grant into monthly amounts. If most of it goes to rent or a deposit, figure out what you have left for each month so you can plan your spending and avoid stress.
