The semester fee mainly goes to the student welfare organization to which your educational institution belongs.The semester fee is primarily used to fund student welfare services in Oslo. Students who do not pay the semester fee are not entitled to use SiO’s services, student discounts, or offers.

It is the students themselves who decide what the money should be used for.The Welfare Council in Oslo and Akershus annually provides input to SiO on behalf of the students on what the semester fee should be used for. 

The semester fee is something almost all students in Norway pay every autumn and spring to be registered as a student.For many students, a paid semester fee is a prerequisite for:

• semester registration
• registering for exams
• retaining study rights
• receiving student support from Lånekassen

It is your place of study that collects the semester fee, registers the payment, and confirms that you are a validly registered student.If you have questions about payment, payment deadlines, or confirmation of student status, you should therefore contact your educational institution directly or check the information in Studentweb.

If you study at an institution associated with SiO, you currently pay a semester fee of NOK 690, once per semester.

Sometimes, unfortunately, a valid student ID is not registered in our systems for people who are registered as students at their place of study. In that case, we have to perform a manual check to ensure that those who are entitled to student prices and student benefits receive them.We are working on a better solution for this.

If you have paid the semester fee but will not be studying, you can apply for a refund of the semester fee from the institution where you paid it.Note that there may be a deadline for applying for a refund.
